Full orbit simulations of collisional impurity transport in spherical tokamak plasmas with strongly-sheared electric fields

The collisional dynamics of test impurity ions in spherical tokamak plasmas with strongly-sheared radial electric fields is investigated by means of a test particle full orbit simulation code. The strength of the shear is such that the standard drift ordering can no longer be assumed and a full orbit approach is required. The effect of radial electric field shear on neoclassical particle transport is quantified for a range of test particle mass and charge numbers and electric field parameters. It is shown that the effect of a sheared electric field is to enhance the confinement of impurity species above the level observed in the absence of such a field. The effect may be explained in terms of a collisional drag force drift, which is proportional to particle charge number but independent of particle mass. This drift acts inwards for negative radial electric fields and outwards for positive fields, implying strongly enhanced confinement of highly ionized impurity ions in the presence of a negative radial electric field.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Nuclear Fusio

Evaluation of a service-learning elective as an approach to enhancing the pharmacist's role in health promotion in South Africa

Background. A service-learning (SL) elective offered to final-year pharmacy students was introduced in 2007. The elective demonstrated a holistic approach to creating opportunities for future pharmacists to understand the current needs and future challenges of the burden of disease in developing countries such as South Africa and to foresee their key roles in health promotion. Methods. The 2007 Sasol National Festival of Science and Technology (SciFest) was chosen as the ideal platform to implement this elective. Evaluation of the elective was carried out in association with the Academic Development Centre using a web-based software tool known as the ADC evaluation assistant (ADCEA). The ADCEA consisted of a ‘question bank’ from which the course facilitators selected nine ranked closed questions as well as two open-ended questions. Results. SciFest participation, in the course of the service-learning elective, was acknowledged by students to have prepared them as responsible citizens to undertake health promotion in the public sector healthcare system. Conclusion. Students’ experiences of the learning opportunities provided in the SciFest elective highlight the strengths of this SL programme

A statistical learning method to fast generalised rule induction directly from raw measurements

Induction of descriptive models is one of the most important technologies in data mining. The expressiveness of descriptive models are of paramount importance in applications that examine the causality of relationships between variables. Most of the work on descriptive models has concentrated on less expressive approaches such as clustering algorithms or rule-based approaches that are limited to a particular type of data, such as association rule mining for binary data. However, in many applications its important to understand the structure of the produced model for further human evaluation. In this research we present a novel generalised rule induction method that allows the induction of descriptive and expressive rules directly from both categorical and numerical features

Obesity: a preliminary report of an introductory service-learning course on the role of pharmacy students in health promotion

Lifestyle diseases such as obesity have been neglected in developing countries partly due to a more urgent focus on infectious diseases in these countries. The incidence of obesity is on the increase in developing countries, with a marked rise in childhood obesity. A health promotioning service-learning principles required final year pharmacy students to prepare a pilot-tested computer-based quiz, using a pre- and post-intervention test design, along with other learning material, for participants at the 2007 Sasol National Festival of Science and Technology (SciFest). Interactive models, posters and information leaflets were used in explaining the prevention and control of obesity to learners. The results showed that the pre-existing knowledge of the participants was good. There was a further improvement after the educational intervention. Activities such as this are important in heightening awareness of obesity in learners as it is likely to reduce the incidence of obesity later in life. Furthermore, the activity also served to increase awareness of the role of pharmacists in the prevention of lifestyle diseases such as obesity

A rule induction approach to forecasting critical alarms in a telecommunication network

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a white box method of predicting critical alarms so they can be mitigated and understood by engineers. Forecasting these alarms will avoid outages and maintain the agreed service level which is beneficial to both the provider of telecommunication services and the consumers. The paper evaluates several item set mining approaches on a set of alarms of the British Telecom (BT) national telecommunication network and proposes a novel transformation of the data to enable the discovery of patterns undetectable by current item set mining approaches. The result is a method for rule induction that predicts alarms with high precision using a wide range of features

I ao VIII d.

Labour market experiences of young UK Bangladeshi men: Identity, inclusion and exclusion in inner-city London

    Get PDF
Detailed qualitative data are used to explore the processes perpetuatinglabour market disadvantage among young UK-Bangladeshi men living in central London. Strong forces of inclusion within the Bangladeshi community are found to interact with forces of exclusion from ‘mainstream’ society to constrain aspirations and limit opportunities. Though diverse forms of young Bangladeshi masculinity are found, a common pattern is heavy dependency on intra-ethnic networks. Negative experiences of and isolation from ‘mainstream’ society further reinforce reliance on ‘our own people’. However, acute ambivalence towards belonging to a dense Bangladeshi community exists, exemplified in the widespread denigration of the restaurant trade. Many respondents express the desire to ‘break out’ and access new experiences. The findings support current policy emphasis on ‘connecting people to work’ but highlight the more fundamental need to connect people across ethnic boundaries. The paper urges researchers to ‘unpack’ ethnicity to consider carefully what ethnic identity implies in terms of access to resources and opportunities for different individuals in different contexts in order better to understand the diversity of labour market outcomes and the persistence of disadvantage
